A Talking Walls computer kiosk, within the ruins of Beaulieu Abbey provides visitors with a virtual tour of the Abbey as it was during its life as a thriving Cistercian Abbey. The audio-visual display offers a 3D insight into the workings of the abbey, with virtual guided tours by nine historical figures including King John, who founded the Abbey in 1204 and others who lived and worked there until the Abbey’s dissolution at the time of the Reformation in 1538.
Visitors will be able to continue their exploration at home via the web and younger visitors can take part in quizzes, story writing and compile on screen jigsaws.

Officially launching Talking Walls, Mary Montagu-Scott, daughter of Lord Montagu said: “This Beautiful, serene and historic setting is now enhanced by this guide, which allows visitors to experience the abbey in its former glory. We are delighted to be the first location to showcase this exciting new technology.”
The Talking Walls is the creation of Deborah Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Design and Development at the University of Winchester. The project has been match funded by the South East Economic Development Association (SEEDA).
Following its predicted success, the concept will be adapted to suit other museums, heritage sites and historic royal palaces across the country.
